The Alaskan rainforest that surrounds Witter Alaska is some of the most picturesque scenery you will ever have the joy to hunt in. Hunting off of houseboat in remote solitude where the only things surrounding you are waterfalls and mountains, you are sure to enjoy your odyssey for inland Black Bears and Mountain goats.
The houseboat is seventy-two feet and can sleep five to six people comfortably. With a full kitchen your captain/guide will cook fresh meals every day while you gaze out to a truly beautiful setting. You will not see another boat while in the outfitter’s isolated cove, which will make you feel like you are staying at a place unreached by man.
These Black Bear hunts are truly unique because hunters get to enjoy spot and stalk hunts on the beach. Bears are spotted from the boat, which is a 28 foot custom Alaskan stainless-steel boat with twin Honda 150 engines. Once a bear is spotted, you jump onto a Kodiak and sneak your way ashore, to get close enough to tell if it’s the right bear for you. If not, you sneak back out and begin looking for the next animal.
You will get the opportunity to see many bears, with the average being 6 foot with seventeen-inch skull. Hunts take place from Mid-May through Mid-June. One of the main benefits of hunting with us in Alaska is it’s not just a pure bear hunt. During your adventure you get to fish for Halibut, Yellow Eye Rock Fish, Ling Cod, Salmon and more; one of the most special parts of the trip is pulling up shrimp pots eating fresh shrimp on the boat while you glass for bears. All of this is included during your bear hunt. No one works harder than our guides to ensure you a once in a lifetime experience!
Mountain goat hunts with this outfitter are enjoyed the same way as bear hunts – spot and stalk from the vessel. Mountain goat hunts are very extreme hunts, and one should be in good shape to help produce a successful hunt. Preparing for your hunt physically and mentally allows hunters to enjoy the rugged beauty of Alaska. Be sure to have the appropriate equipment to ease the wear and tear on your body, as well as aiding your climb to your goats. JWD can provide packing and equipment lists at your request.
Our outfitter has guided over 50 successful goat hunts and knows how to find good mature billies. The goats harvested average from 8 ½ to 9 ¾ inches that sport a beautiful coat. Hunts take place from September 15 to about October 20: we do not like to push and take hunters past this date due to worsening weather patterns. Hunters should be comfortable shooting up to 300 yards with some hunts getting to within 50 yards.
While you are goat hunting, your adventure doesn’t stop there. During days of inclement weather or after your successful hunt, you have the opportunity to hunt for Harlequin and Goldeneye Sea Ducks!
Safety is the name of the game when it comes to Alaskan weather – our outfitter is in code to US Coast Guard. A Satellite Radio and VFS Radio are carried up the mountain on all stalks. Our guide is also trained in back country first aid as well as CRP.
Alaska is truly a beautiful place, still pristine condition with nature and wildlife. Once you go and enjoy one of these adventures, you will want to go back time and time again.
